“Is it a thriller or suspense?” she asked me. “Will women like it?”
“Yes to all,” I told her. “If you read Clancy, Koontz or Cussler, you’ll love these.”
“What are they about?” she asked, holding a copy of The Evidence in her hands. She scanned through the endorsements and I watched her eye stop on the pull-quote from Davis Bunn. An explosive first novel from a major new talent.
“It’s about an astronaut, John Wells,” I said. “A Navy pilot and father of four who feels a strong call to explore. He wants a chance to go to Mars, to investigate evidence of life on Mars, but that dangerous mission would take him away from his family. For a very long time.” She paged through the acknowledgement and first chapter, her young son pulling at a pants leg.
“So, which comes first? Mission… or marriage?” I asked her. “That’s the struggle, set against a backdrop of international intrigue, charismatic prophets, and life in space.”
“But will women like it?” she asked again, looking up at me. She gripped the novel closer, as though she intended to buy.
“If you share this with your friends, they probably won’t give it back,” I warned her. “And you won’t sleep at night. You won’t be able to put it down.
“Why?”
“You’ll get the answer to the question. The one most of us ask at some point in our lives.”
She cocked her head, confused. I’m sure she was reading when I was blabbing away earlier. “Which comes first?” I repeated. “Mission… or marriage?”
The young mother pulled the book tight, grabbed The Proof and The Return off the shelf, and headed toward the register, smiling. She looked back, as she left the Christian fiction section of Barnes and Noble, and tried to wave with a trio of red, white and blue books under arm.
“Thank you!” she said as she walked away, her free hand leading the little boy. “This is just what I was looking for. My husband needs to read these, too.”
