Friends and family,
I leave tomorrow (Saturday) for my first of two Appalachian Trail adventures in 2015. I’m writing to let you know that I’ll be out of the office for ten days, and to offer… if you are interested… to keep you in the loop with my trail log as I progress up the trail.
This spring I am headed to Hot Springs, NC. In 1975 my family hiked the 179 mile segment from Hot Springs, NC, to Damascus, VA, while I worked as a research diver in Central America, diving in the Caribbean. I came home early from Honduras and decided to surprise them on the trail. I flew into Asheville, took a bus to Hot Springs, gathered up their car, and drove to Damascus to hike “backwards” north-to-south and meet them en route.
As it turns out, my family got off the trail early, discovered that their automobile and food supplies were taken by a crazy son, and then they desperately raced back to the trail to try to catch me before I disappeared in the direction of Georgia, car keys in hand. It all worked out fine, but I was the one surprised to find them waiting on me at a road crossing and not the other way around.
If you want me to take you off the daily note, just reply and let me know. Otherwise, I’ll drop you an email daily (or thereabouts) and keep you abreast of the bears and rain and mud and cold and blisters and a blessed good time! If I am leaving off someone who wants a note, be sure to remind me!
Yours truly,
Austin Boyd
